New Norcia / River Walk Interpretive Trail.

River Walk Interpretive Trail.

New Norcia is Australia’s only monastic town, with the Monastery, where the monks live, work and pray, at its heart. The monks of New Norcia live according to the guidance and rhythms of The Rule of St Benedict, which has been followed by monks since the sixth century AD.

Challenge.

Continuing our work with the New Norcia Benedictine Community, we were tasked with developing a new interpretive trail for their popular River Walk. The previous trail signage had fallen into disrepair since it's original creation in the 1980's.

Response.

These signs continue our material theme of other signage used throughout the town and use corten steel. Our colour palette is taken from the landscape and each sign appears to be ‘extruded’ from the earth. They stand proud, yet blend harmoniously into the landscape they have been placed in. As the steel rusted it took on the personality and patina of its environment, further reinforcing the signs connection to the site.

Result.

The signage is consistently commended by visitors to the town. The materials are gracefully ageing and have indeed taken on, and become one, with the place in which they help interpret.
